How to Find & Book Your MOT

Three simple steps to get your MOT booked at the right garage.

Step 1

Search by Postcode

Use the GOV.UK garage finder or Google Maps to find DVSA-approved MOT test centres near your location.

Step 2

Compare & Choose

Compare prices, read reviews, and check availability. Look for DVSA-approved garages with good ratings.

Step 3

Book Your MOT

Book online or call the garage directly. Remember you can book up to a month before your MOT expires.

What to Look for in an MOT Garage

Not all MOT centres are equal. Here's how to choose the right one.

DVSA Approved

Look for the blue three-triangle sign. Only approved Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS) can conduct MOT tests.

Good Reviews

Check Google Reviews and Trustpilot ratings. Look for garages with consistently positive feedback about fairness and transparency.

Transparent Pricing

The best garages advertise their MOT price clearly. Be wary of garages that won’t quote a price upfront or charge significantly more than average.

Clear Communication

Good garages explain any failures clearly, show you the problem if asked, and give you an honest assessment of repair urgency and cost.

Convenient Booking

Look for garages offering online booking, while-you-wait service, or courtesy cars. Saturday availability is useful for working drivers.

Repair Capability

If your vehicle fails, a garage that can also do the repairs saves you time and may offer a free retest when work is done on site.

Pre-MOT Checklist

Check these common failure points before your test to increase your chances of passing first time.

All lights and indicators working (including brake lights and fog lights)

Tyres have at least 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters

Windscreen has no cracks larger than 10mm in the driver’s swept area

Windscreen wipers clear effectively without smearing

Horn works and is loud enough to be heard by other road users

All mirrors are intact, secure, and provide adequate rear view

Seatbelts latch securely, retract properly, and are not frayed or cut

Number plates are clean, legible, and correctly formatted

Brake fluid is at the correct level (check under the bonnet)

No excessive exhaust smoke on start-up (especially diesels)

Steering does not have excessive play or pull to one side

Doors open and close securely from both inside and outside

MOT Test FAQ

Frequently asked questions about finding an MOT centre and booking your test.

How do I find MOT test centres near me?
You can find MOT test centres near you by using the official GOV.UK MOT garage finder at gov.uk/find-mot-centre, which lists all DVSA-approved testing stations by postcode. You can also search Google Maps for 'MOT test near me' to find nearby garages with reviews and ratings. Many garages now offer online booking through their websites or comparison platforms.
How much does an MOT test cost in 2026?
The maximum fee for a standard car MOT test is set by the DVSA at £54.85 (as of 2026). However, many garages charge less than this, with prices typically ranging from £25 to £54.85 depending on your location and the garage. Some garages offer free or discounted MOT tests when combined with a service. It is always worth comparing prices at several local garages.
When is my MOT due?
Your MOT is due on the anniversary of your last MOT test, or three years after the vehicle was first registered if it has not yet had an MOT. You can check your exact MOT due date for free by entering your registration number on our site. We will show you the MOT expiry date, any advisories from the last test, and the full test history.
Can I get my MOT done early?
Yes. You can get your MOT done up to one calendar month (minus a day) before the expiry date and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT expires on 15 June, you can have it tested from 16 May onwards and your new MOT will still run until 15 June the following year. Testing earlier than this window will reset your expiry date to the date of the new test.
What happens if my MOT expires?
If your MOT expires, you cannot legally drive the vehicle on public roads (except directly to a pre-booked MOT test). Driving without a valid MOT is an offence that can result in a fine of up to £1,000. Your vehicle insurance may also be invalidated if you drive without a valid MOT certificate. You can still tax a vehicle without an MOT, but you cannot legally drive it.
How long does an MOT test take?
A standard MOT test typically takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour. If the vehicle fails and repairs are needed, this will take additional time depending on the work required. Some garages offer a while-you-wait service, while others may ask you to leave the vehicle for a few hours. It is best to check with your chosen garage when booking.
What does an MOT test check?
An MOT test checks that your vehicle meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards. Key items checked include: lights and indicators, steering and suspension, brakes, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, windscreen and wipers, exhaust emissions, bodywork and structure, mirrors, fuel system, and number plates. The test does not cover the engine, clutch, or gearbox condition.
Can I choose any garage for my MOT?
You can have your MOT done at any DVSA-approved testing station (also called Vehicle Testing Stations or VTS). These garages display a blue three-triangle sign. You are not restricted to your local area or the garage where you purchased the vehicle. Main dealers, independent garages, and national chains like Halfords, Kwik Fit, and ATS can all perform MOT tests if they are approved.
What should I check before my MOT?
Before your MOT, check these common failure points: all lights and indicators work, tyres have at least 1.6mm tread depth, windscreen wipers clear effectively, windscreen has no large cracks in the driver’s view, horn works, mirrors are intact, seatbelts latch and retract properly, number plates are clean and legible, and brake fluid is at the correct level. Fixing these beforehand can save you a retest fee.
Is there a free MOT retest if my car fails?
If your vehicle fails the MOT test, you are entitled to a free partial retest if: the repairs are done at the same garage that tested it, and the vehicle is brought back within 10 working days. If you take the vehicle elsewhere for repairs and return for retest, or if it is returned after 10 working days, the garage can charge for a full retest (up to the maximum MOT fee).
