What the Combined MOT & Tax Check Shows You

One search delivers everything you need to verify a vehicle is legal and roadworthy before buying or driving it.

Current MOT Status

See whether the vehicle holds a valid MOT certificate right now, along with the exact expiry date. Instantly flag vehicles that have let their MOT lapse.

Tax (VED) Status

Check whether the vehicle is currently taxed and when the tax expires. Untaxed vehicles face fines and can be clamped — always verify before you drive.

Full MOT History

Every MOT test from 2005 onwards — pass/fail outcomes, advisory notices, failure reasons, and mileage at test. See the complete picture, not just the latest result.

Mileage Timeline

Odometer readings recorded at every MOT test, plotted as a timeline. Spot suspicious drops that could indicate mileage fraud before you hand over your money.

Upcoming Expiry Alerts

See at a glance how many days remain before the MOT or tax expires — useful for existing owners as well as buyers negotiating on a vehicle nearing its due date.

Vehicle Details

Make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, and first registration date — all confirmed from DVLA records so you can verify the details match the car in front of you.

Why You Need to Check Both MOT and Tax

MOT and tax are two separate legal requirements. A vehicle can fail one without failing the other — and both carry penalties if missed.

Legal Requirement

Both a valid MOT and valid tax are required to drive on UK public roads. Police and ANPR cameras check both automatically. Driving without either can result in fines, clamping, or prosecution.

Used Car Buying

Sellers sometimes claim a vehicle is 'taxed and tested' when it is not. Our free check takes five seconds and independently verifies both claims from official government records — before you commit.

Ownership Reminders

Even if you know your own car well, it is easy to lose track of renewal dates. Running a quick combined check confirms both expiry dates and helps you plan renewals without last-minute panic.

Check MOT and Tax — FAQ

Common questions about checking MOT and tax status together.

Can I check both MOT and tax status for free?
Yes. Our combined check is completely free. Enter a UK registration number and you will instantly see whether the vehicle has a valid MOT certificate, when it expires, and the current tax (VED) status — all from official DVSA and DVLA data. There is no charge, no account required, and no limit on how many vehicles you can check.
What is the difference between MOT and car tax?
An MOT is an annual roadworthiness test required for vehicles over three years old. It checks brakes, lights, steering, emissions, and many other safety-critical components. Car tax (also called Vehicle Excise Duty or VED) is a separate government charge for using a vehicle on public roads. A vehicle can be taxed but have an expired MOT, or have a valid MOT but no tax — both are required to drive legally. Our check shows you both statuses in one place.
What happens if a vehicle has no MOT or no tax?
Driving a vehicle without a valid MOT is illegal in the UK and can result in a fine of up to £1,000. Driving without valid tax can result in a fine of up to £80 (rising to £1,000 if it goes to court). The vehicle can also be clamped or impounded. ANPR cameras check both MOT and tax status automatically, so there is no hiding from enforcement. Always verify both before buying or driving any used vehicle.
How current is the MOT and tax data?
MOT data is sourced directly from the DVSA and is updated in real time following each test. Tax status data comes from DVLA records and is typically updated within 24 hours of a payment or expiry. For the most authoritative data, you can also check the DVLA's own vehicle enquiry service at gov.uk, but our tool pulls from the same underlying source.
Does checking MOT and tax tell me if a car is safe to buy?
It is an essential first step. A valid MOT shows the vehicle passed a roadworthiness test — but MOTs only capture the condition at the moment of testing. Our full MOT history check reveals the pattern of past failures and advisories, which is a far more reliable indicator of overall condition. We recommend running the full history as well as the current status check before any purchase.
