Prepare for Your MOT — Check History First

Our free MOT history check reveals everything you need to know before walking into a test centre.

Outstanding Advisories

See every advisory from previous tests that has not been resolved. These are the most likely causes of failure at your next test — fix them first.

Previous Failure Items

Items that caused failures in past tests reveal recurring weaknesses. Check whether they were genuinely fixed or just temporarily patched.

Mileage Verification

Confirms the recorded mileage history is consistent. Useful when preparing a vehicle for sale after the MOT, to support a higher asking price.

Current MOT Expiry

See the exact expiry date so you know your booking deadline. Remember you can test up to one month early without losing days on the certificate.

Defect Categories

Failures and advisories sorted by component — brakes, tyres, lights, emissions, suspension. Plan repairs by priority before booking.

Pass Rate History

See whether this vehicle typically passes first time. A low pass rate means more preparation is needed before you book the next test.

How to Book an MOT Test

Booking your MOT is straightforward. Here is what to do.

1. Check Your History

Enter your registration above to see outstanding advisories and confirm your MOT expiry date. Fix any known issues before booking to avoid a costly retest.

2. Find a Test Centre

Use the DVSA's test centre finder on GOV.UK or search nationally known chains. Compare prices — the maximum fee is £54.85 but many centres charge less.

3. Book and Attend

Book directly with the test centre. Bring the vehicle's V5C logbook if available. The test takes around 45–60 minutes for a standard car.

Booking an MOT Test — FAQ

Common questions about booking and preparing for an MOT test.

How do I book an MOT test?
You can book an MOT test directly with any DVSA-approved test centre. Many garages and national chains allow online booking via their websites. You can also use the DVSA's 'Find an MOT test centre' tool on GOV.UK to search for approved centres near you by postcode. It is worth comparing prices, as costs can vary significantly between independent garages and main dealers.
How much does an MOT test cost in 2026?
The DVSA sets a maximum fee for an MOT test — for cars this is currently £54.85. However, test centres are free to charge less, and many garages offer discounts or promotional rates to attract customers. It is worth shopping around, but be cautious of very cheap offers that may indicate the test is not being carried out thoroughly.
When should I book my MOT test?
Your MOT is due annually on the anniversary of the previous test (or on the third birthday of a new vehicle). You can book and take the test up to one month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires without losing any time from the expiry date. This means if your MOT expires on 15 July, you can take the test as early as 16 June and the new certificate will still expire on 15 July the following year.
What happens if my car fails its MOT?
If your vehicle fails its MOT, you will receive a Vehicle Defect Rectification Sheet listing all failure items. You have the right to a free partial retest if you have the repairs carried out at the same test centre within 10 working days. If you choose to have repairs done elsewhere, you will need to pay for a full retest. You cannot drive a vehicle that has failed its MOT on a public road unless the previous certificate is still valid.
Should I check MOT history before booking a test?
Absolutely. Checking the vehicle's MOT history before booking a test reveals any outstanding advisories from previous tests that are likely to cause failures this time round. Addressing known advisory items before the test can save you the cost of a retest fee. Our free MOT history check shows every advisory from every previous test so you know exactly what to fix before you book.
